One of the most popular gaming platforms ever, Roblox, has been missing on PlayStation all this time, but it looks like this gap is to be filled. A recent listing shows that Roblox is searching for a senior software engineer whose mission is to develop a Roblox app for PlayStation 4/5.
It’s strange that it hasn’t entered this console through all of these years. Roblox supports gamepad controls and isn’t very demanding in terms of visuals, so hardware compatibility is not that much of an issue. Last year, though, David Baszucki, the CEO of Roblox, stated that the company plans to expand to devices like Sony PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. As for Xbox, Roblox is there since 2016.
Controversial as it is, Roblox is a unique institution in the gaming world. Not only is it home for thousands of games, but also social media in its own right, an environment where players have one profile, one avatar and friends list, and one billing to access all the games on it. More than that, developers can earn on the games they make with the tools Roblox provides (though it’s not all unicorns and rainbows, and the money one can make it harder than expected).
Where will Roblox expand next? It’s too early to talk about it, but one of the directions named by Baszucki is VR, namely Oculus Quest. Probably PlayStation VR is also the place to go. Again, given quite the basic visual style of Roblox, it won’t require as powerful hardware, but the VR experience will still feel authentic.
So, while Roblox refused to break it down officially, its spokespersons admit that Roblox is “hiring like crazy”. This may hint that it moves in several directions simultaneously. On what platform would you like to see Roblox the most? What do you expect from its PlayStation debut? Tell us what you think about it in the comments if you please!
