The undisputed champion of the shopping app installs global ranking in 2020, Amazon lost its leading position in 2021, slipping to the fourth place behind such e-commerce giants as Shopee, Shein, and Meesho – according to Apptopia, a trusted real-time competitive intelligence platform.

What are the companies that outmatched Amazon?

The three companies that moved the famous tech giant down the global rankings list are:

  • Shopee is a Singapore-based, mobile-only e-commerce app with a strong focus on social selling. The platform serves Latin America and Southeast Asia. Shopee ranked #1 globally among the most downloaded shopping apps of 2021, with a whopping 203 million unique installs.

  • Shein is a fun and affordable shopping platform located in China that promotes itself as a reliable one-stop-shop for fast fashion lovers. The app saw an impressive 190 million installations in 2021.

  • Meesho is a growing social commerce platform quartered in India that specializes in reselling lifestyle and fashion products. In 2021, the Meesho app had 153 million downloads worldwide.

Amazon, with its 148 million global installs, still stands first in Apptopia's rating for the most installed shopping apps within the United States, accounting for over 40% of U.S. retail e-commerce sales in 2021.

Among other U.S.-based and international shopping apps that made it to the top-10 most downloaded list according to Apptopia, there is Flipkart (93M), AliExpress (84M), Wish (72M), Pinduoduo (67.4M), Lazada (67.1M), and Alibaba (62M).
